Sights and Sounds

We will be driving the Pacific Coast until just before L.A. Then we are planning to skirt the metropolis and head into the mountains and over to the desert of Southern Cali and Arizona. This was a favorite from our last trip. I think because it was so different than our home. The desert has a quiet that is so loud…it’s truly a wonder to experience.

Around Christmas we are crossing into Mexico via Mexicali. Bienvenidos a Mexico! We have done a fair bit of research into where to stay and what are the gems of the Baja peninsula.

Tacos…tacos…tacos. Cheap, fresh and abundant. All 3 of us are seafood lovers. I hear Baja is the place for marine life both from the beach and on the plate. We can expect locals selling their catch to tourists on the beach right at your camp. It is also the season for the gray whale migration….it sounds like we will be able to see them right from the shore or a kayak on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula.

Baja California is a desert peninsula with the Sea of Cortez to the East and the wild Pacific to the West. We see images of giant Dr. Suess cactus and sandy beaches….sounds pretty picturesque. Days spent snorkeling or kayaking and surfing on the West Coast.

With the border in our rear view mirror, we are going South relatively quickly. Baja Sur is much warmer and ideal for camping both on the beach (for free) and in campgrounds for a modest fee. We are also planning on spending some stretches around smaller towns or villages to try to integrate into the culture and hopefully improve on our poor Spanish skills.
